This story is very outstanding and different from other detective stories and very entertaining in the style of fighting with strategies and logics, life gambling and even with mind reading and complicated plans. (This can be seen from the duel between Rio and Narumi, which, to me, it is the most interesting part of Spiral.) These points make it a different story from Conan and Kindaichi, who would normally not have to risk lives of themselves or people nearby. Spiral is the type of story that uses logics to predict the next events or outcomes, not the one that uses solid evidences to conclude everything. This is both advantage and disadvantage. However, it is still inferior to Conan or Kindaichi regarding the integrity of concepts and hypotheses used in the story, which sometimes look over-exaggerated. There is another issue that makes Spiral more intensive than Conan, i.e. the continuity of the story. There are rarely cases or stories outside the original target of the story. Every event is directed to the group called âBlade Childrenâ and âHuntersâ; therefore, the length of the story is not overly long like Conan, which enjoys a lot of cases that are not related to the original objective of the story. The total episodes of Spiral are only 25.
In terms of soundtrack and graphics, Spiral is well-made. The character design is also pretty much interesting, judged by both appearances of the characters and their personalities. Compliments to the role that Hiyono receives in this story! She is the main character who does not look fragile like those in other stories; still, she is not so strong or outstanding that she would dominate the real main character, Ayumu Narumi. In fact, the roles that Ayumu and Hiyono receive seem to support each other pretty much. In this point, Spiral is praised. For other characters, they also have their own personalities that, even though they are not much interesting or unique, are maintained throughout the story.
Even if there are a lot of fights among Blade children and Hunters, there are rarely violent scenes despite some death scenes, bombing and sniping. There is nothing that needs to be censored. Therefore, everybody, esp. the fans of Conan and Kindaichi, should enjoy this show regardless of their ages.
Ayumu Narumi The main character of this story and also the younger brother of Kiyotaka Narumi, a very well-known detective who disappeared cluelessly a few years ago. Since Kiyotaka was very good at everything he did and Ayumu believed that he could never match his brother, he has lost his confidence from then on. However, his talented abilities are still hidden inside his blood, esp. for his problem analysis with logics and strategic planning as well as for finding the truth. He looked alone, staying mostly by himself. After he met Hiyono, many things is him seemed to be more and more mature.
